Exclusively designed to complement the coastal environment and living; Sanctum introduces a truly unique approach to contemporary apartment beachside living. The external architecture is both highly articulated and sculpturally interesting; displaying a rich palette of external finishes and treatments including natural copper cladding, timber decking, sandstone walls and paving. The spectacular inner atrium encloses a tropical landscaped courtyard infused with natural light; around it sheltered tiled breezeways provide access to every apartment. The architecture is complemented by a mix of formal and informal landscaping surrounding the building and large sundrenched timber decks to north.

Internal apartment areas range from 100sqm - 130sqm with secure lift access from basement offering two secure car spaces and storage per apartment.

All three bed apartments enter through private courts from the breezeway; providing a secluded entrance and a perfect resting place for sandy surfboards and shoes.

All apartments include full height commercial grade sliding and stacking doors that open right up, along with 2.7m - 3.4m high ceiling and three bedroom apartments offering a 10m wide frontage to north allowing cross-flow ventilation and abundant natural light.

Judges Comments

This project sets an excellent benchmark for the ongoing redevelopment and densification of the area surrounding the Cronulla railway station. This is a beachside suburb undergoing significant change and growing a demand for quality apartment living to meet the downsizer market. The design achieves a high degree of privacy by orientating living spaces away from the street and providing spacious internal and external living spaces with flow through ventilation and northern orientation.

An attractive streetscape is created through the clever articulation of the building façade, combined with the use of high quality materials such as copper cladding and commercial grade glazing and extensive landscape grounds.

Renzo Tonin & Associates' involvement

Renzo Tonin & Associates were engaged to provide design advice pertaining to the acoustics of this prestigious residential building, namely, Sanctum located at 25-31 Richmount Street, Cronulla. One of the essential qualities the Client, Cabe Development recognised was the ability of our company to provide innovation and feasible alternative for the various design components required on a project.

The following is a summary of these features of the acoustic design incorporated into the building structure to meet the expectations of the clients and to achieve a satisfactory accommodation environment consistent with the intended quality of the building.

  1. Design of in-situ wall systems namely AFS which accelerated the construction programme.

  2. Design of mechanical systems which eliminated the total reliance on hard duck work.

  3. Cost effectiveness design of tiles and timber floor systems which addresses the issue of football noise and achieve a high acoustic performance.

In addition, as part of the QA process, Renzo Tonin & Associates inspected every aspect of the design and confirmed successfully the internal acoustics of the building by testing various systems and design components.
